Got to O2 in Broadmead at 5:30pm (iPhone went on sale at 6:02pm). Was tenth in the queue.

Bought the phone and a belt case, and went to the Hillgrove to meet up with some friends. Stewart had his MBPro and a phone with which to get internet access, so activated it in the pub. Now, I was already an O2 customer, but nonetheless I thought this was pretty slick timing:

  1. Unwrap iPhone and coo a bit, 2:00
  2. Plug iPhone into Mac and let iTunes start the activation process, 0:45
  3. Bugger about logging into my webmail to recover my Apple ID password, 2:30
  4. Ask to transfer my contract over to the iPhone, and receive SMS with a passcode to type in to prove it was my contract, 1:30
  5. iPhone activated and picked up my old number, 4:00

Total time from unwrapping to being able to make/receive calls with my old number, not far off 10 minutes.

The Hillgrove has free wifi (or at least, there’s a default unencrypted Netgear ssid kicking around – the MBPro didn’t pick it up because it’s not configured to look for open wifi, but the iPhone was and did). Cue having lots of fun with Safari and the maps application.

And thus ended the first day. And I saw that it was good[*].

[*] Since everything on the iPhone apparently runs as root, and root = God, I think I can get away with that
